About Michael
Michael O'Sullivan grew up just outside Dublin in a family deeply connected to Irish rural life. His father ran a weighbridge business that took them across farming communities nationwide, and travelling with him from a young age gave Michael a first-hand appreciation for those communities: the distances, the social fabric, and the quiet challenges of life outside the cities.
He went on to spend over 15 years in the online dating technology space, joining an early-stage company that had been building web-based dating platforms since around 2005. Over those years he helped develop the infrastructure behind a wide range of niche communities — platforms built around shared interests, beliefs, and lifestyles — including sophisticated features well beyond standard matching: event listings, social feeds, moderation tools, and community management systems.
It was that combination of heritage and experience that led to Grounded. Michael recognised that Irish singles — particularly those in smaller towns and rural areas — faced a particular challenge: smaller social circles, long working hours, and the privacy concerns that come with living somewhere everyone knows your business. The technology his team had built was uniquely suited to solving exactly that: not just matching people one-to-one, but building a genuine community of like-minded, locally rooted people.
Grounded launched in November 2022, built around identity verification, community features, and a deliberate design philosophy: reduce ghosting, encourage honesty, and make it feel less like a catalogue and more like a community. His core belief — and the one at the heart of every Grounded feature — is that the best matches come from being genuinely yourself, and that technology should be a stepping stone to real-world connection, not a substitute for it.
